Queer Garden Network presents a simple herbalism kit workshop hosted by Jiya, spiritual herbalist and owner of the Traveling Teahouse Apothecary, which has been growing herbs and food in Detroit’s Brightmoor neighborhood for over a decade.

Jiya has spent years helping hundreds of people build deeper medicinal and spiritual relationships with plants, and during this workshop they’ll walk us through the foundations of building a practical herbalism kit for your house.

Over about an hour, we’ll cover:

  • Common herbs & how to work with them

  • Harvesting and collecting herbs

  • Basic preparation methods

  • Storage and preservation

  • Supporting health through common dis-eases

We’ll also be working hands-on with a few preparations including:

  • Elixir

  • Oil infusion

  • Poultice

  • Tincture

By the end, you’ll leave with an understanding of four different ways to work with herbs and enough context to begin experimenting on your own without overcomplicating it.

Food & Vibe

After the workshop, we’ll shift into our standard potluck hangout situation.

Expect tea, snacks, conversation, and generally relaxed community garden energy. Bring something to share if you’re able.

This is not a hyper-formal class. Questions, curiosity, and wandering conversations are welcome.

Who This Is For

Queer, neurodivergent, plant-curious, and herbalism-curious and spiritual folks in Metro Detroit.

You do not need prior experience with herbs. This is designed for beginners and people who want a more approachable relationship with medicinal plants.

If you’ve been herbalism-curious but intimidated, this is probably for you.

  • A mug for tea if you have one
