Composting Workshop & Potluck
Introductory hands on learning experiences to backyard composting & potluck from a Queer Permaculture perspective

Time & Location
May 14, 2026, 6:00 PM – 8:30 PM
MISC•aLAIR•é•Omm…, 15445 Biltmore St, Detroit, MI 48227, USA
What We’ll Be Doing
Part one is hands-on, backyard composting—weather permitting. We’ll build a pile, turn it, poke at it, and generally demystify the whole thing.
We’ll look at a few different setups: pallet piles, in-ground composting, and rotating bins, so you can see what actually makes sense for your life (not some idealized homestead fantasy).
You’ll learn from Spencer Field, who’s been composting for 20+ years, and we’ll walk through a simple one-page reference sheet you can take home (and ignore until you’re ready). Expect about an hour of informal, practical learning—no lectures, no pressure.

Food & Vibe
Part two is a pivot into campfire mode.
There will be vegan stew, tea, and kombucha. You bring a snack to share. This is sweatpants, sit-around, mildly feral community time. Talk, stare into the fire, decompress.
Weather may impact the flow, so register so we can keep you in the loop.
Who This Is For
Queer and permaculture-curious folks in Metro Detroit.
If you’ve never composted, perfect. If you’ve tried once and it turned into a soggy mess, also perfect. This is not an advanced class—it’s a “let’s actually make this doable” space.
You don’t need your own setup yet. You can build one later or team up with others.
Also: neurodivergent humans welcome. No social performance required.
What to Bring
Gloves (optional if you don't want dirt under your fingernails)
Food scraps (if you want to contribute to the pile)
Pen or pencil
A dish to share
Something roastable for the fire (optional, but encouraged)
